M1 Carbine Barrel New in Wrap

New and complete M1 Carbine barrel with bayonet attachment and in matching original packaging with a parkerized finish.
I purchased several of these barrels in 1995, put them away in case I needed one and only opened the packaging last week to inspect this barrel.
This is the last one I have and it was m
ade by Herlo Corporation as a replacement barrel.
Production was about 70,000 from 1970-1973.
The barrel is marked with the code for the Non Chrome Lined Barrel 5557154HC.
Date of manufacture is 6-73.
In order to provide full disclosure, Herlo Manufacturing had problems and according to M1 Carbine researchers, no Herlo Barrels were accepted by the Government.
This was not a case where all the barrels were unacceptable or not up to spec, but government inspection revealed that too high a percentage were out of spec. Thus the contract was cancelled.
The packaging and the “P” on the barrel seem to indicate that this barrel did pass inspection.
This seems logical that the production would have continued for almost 3 years without any acceptance.
You can do your own research on Herlo barrels and the specific issues with them and their installation.
These barrels are generally acceptable barrels; however, there was some variability in the rifling twist rates. Those with the faster twist are more acceptable replacement barrels.
The majority of the problems appear to be with the chrome lined barrels and reaming them.
I have placed two on Springfield Armory Receivers (not the US Armory but the commercial Springfield Armory) over 20 years ago when they were available and they shot fine with excellent accuracy at 100 yards.
